Making Knives the D' Holder Way

I'll take you from designing the blade of your dreams to the complete finishing of your beautiful, handmade knife!

Designing The Knife

Follow along, step-by-step as I go through the entire knife design process. This is the step where its easy to change the design before you start with steel. I'll discuss different handles as well as what makes a functional blade design.

Blade Preparation (Pre-Heat Treatment)

There are  several key steps prior to sending your blade off to heat treat.  After watching D' design a knife, this is the first step in creating your very own knife!
Once you have determined the design, you'll scribe the blade profile,  grind the profile leaving the scribe mark. This is very important not to grind past the scribe mark, I'll tell you why in the video. Then we will remove all the steel that is not a knife. Next we mark and drill the evenly spaced pin holes. The real meat of the video is how to correctly establish the plunge cuts and initial grinding of the belly of the blade. The process is simple when you follow these steps! The hollow grind portion is covered in greater detail in the hollow grind videos. The knife is now ready for heat treatment.

Hollow Grinding- 'Free Hand'

In the first of these videos, I'm wearing a Go-Pro to show you what I see while I'm  free hand grinding a knife!  The hollow ground blade is beautiful to look at, light weight and sturdy for all around use. In the other video, you'll see from an observer's point of view how I grind blades.  Most makers who don't like the hollow grind just don't know how to do it in the proper sequence, or with proper body alignment. Follow along as I take you through all of the steps to a free hand hollow ground blade! Your friends and family will be amazed at your talent.

Bolsters & Guards Pt1 (Full Tang)

One of the trademark features on my full tang knives is the nearly invisible lines where the bolster attaches to the blade. In these two videos from different perspectives I'll teach you what you need to do step by step to achieve this incredible fit! Everyone will be asking you how you did this simple but amazing step! Or, they will think you machined the bolster out of the knife blade material!

Bolsters & Guards Pt2 (Stick Tang)

In this video, I'll show you my secret trick of preparing for a perfect silver soldering of the guard of a stick tang. It's not difficult when you use the correct steps, flux, heat and solder. It's also common to over heat the soldered joint. I'll discuss these finer points in the video. I'll include the brand of solder and flux I use to complete this important step.

'Mirror' Finish Blade

I've been known in the knife making industry for over 50 years. And one of the keys to my success is my signature 'mirror finish '. I'll show you my process for producing a mirror polish from start to finish. The included PDF contains the list of materials and buffing compounds I use to achieve this amazing finish. Now you can have people asking you if you dip your blades into chrome!

Handle Finishing

I'll show you my process for producing beautiful handles, even with different hardness handle materials. By following the steps I outline in this video, you'll avoid all of the common mistakes most makers make over and over. You'll never be afraid of using different types of handle materials together again.  Broaden your horizon with various colors and visual textures for a truly visually stunning knife. Stand out in a crowd of mono-material handles. Make handles that pop and create desire in the knife collector's heart.
